Hummingbirds

 

 

  • Hummingbirds range in size from about 2 1/4" to 8 1/2" .
  • They are found only in the Western Hemisphere.
  • Hummingbirds can fly backwards and upside down. Their wings beat about 70 times a second.
  • Their wings rotate at the shoulder allowing
    them to make a forward stroke followed by a
    backward stroke. Hence they can hover.
  • They are found as far north as Alaska and as far south as Tierra Del Fuego.
  • There are 338 species of hummingbirds.
  • Only 16 breed in the 48 contiguous states of the United States. Females take care of the species nest.
  • Males defend the territory. insects.
  • They eat more of them when it rains. Hang red Hummingbirds eat ribbons in your yard early in the season to attract hummingbirds

    boiling 1 part granulated sugar in 4 parts water.
